How to measure for Spindles
Measure, calculate, and install with confidence
What you’ll need
- A tape measure
- An angle finder or angle finder phone app
- Pen and paper to write down your measurement
- Someone to help hold the tape (for long distances)
-
1Identify what you're measuringFor STAIRS: Look at your staircase from the side. You'll measure the diagonal length where your handrail goes (X). Measure the angle of the base rail that runs up the stairs.
For LANDINGS: Look at the horizontal railing area on your landing or balcony (X). -
2Find your start and end pointsLook for the posts at each end of your railing. You'll be measuring between the inside faces of these posts - not including the posts themselves.
-
3Take the measurementFor STAIRS: Place your tape at the bottom post and stretch it to the top post, following the angle of the stairs. For the pitch angle, if using phone app, place on top of base rail.
For LANDINGS: Stretch your tape straight across from one post to the other, keeping it level. -
4Record your measurementWrite down this measurement in millimetres (mm). This is the number you'll enter into the calculator.
Remember:
- Always measure between the posts, not including them
- Measure twice to be sure
Spindle Calculator
Calculate the number of spindles and spacing required for your staircase.
Length of the run (mm)
Measure the horizontal length where the spindles will be installed.
Set Pitch
For landings or flat sections, enter 0. For a typical UK staircase, this is usually between 38° and 45°.
