REGULATIONS & STANDARDS

Outside balustrade systems of all timber types from Cheshire Mouldings have been independently tested for conformity with the relevant Building Regulations in the UK.

All Cheshire Mouldings balustrade systems meet the standards laid down for domestic use. BS6399 Part 1 1966, Loading for Buildings.

A set of European Union regulations for biocidal products are now in place as well, meant to protect people, animals and articles against harmful organisms contained in such products. This is Regulation (EU) 528/2012.

Domestic Settings

Domestic-use balustrades, including stairs and landings, must resist a minimum horizontal, uniformly distributed line load of 0.36kN/m; a uniformly distributed infill load of 0.5kN/m2; and a point load to part of the infill of 0.25kN.

Decks that are 600mm or more above ground require balustrades to conform to the same capability of the heavier loadings of commercial settings.

Raised domestic and light commercial systems have increased requirements. Light commercial means for areas such as offices, hotels and public houses. Here, a balustrade should resist a minimum horizontal, uniformly distributed line load of 0.74kN/m; a uniformly distributed infill load of 1.0kN/m2; and a point load to part of the infill of 0.5kN.

For heavy commercial settings – where many people could congregate and there might be overcrowding – the balustrade should be set at 900mm on stairs and 1100mm for landings and horizontal guarding. Balustrades in these environments have to resist a minimum horizontal, uniformly distributed line load of 1.5kN/m; a uniformly distributed infill load of 1.5kN/m2; and a point load to part of the infill of 1.5kN.
