Garden Decking Checklist

Modern Garden Decking

Garden decking can enhance your outdoor living space and make your garden the ‘go-to’ place for relaxing in the summer, hosting gatherings and playing with the kids. Not to mention that along with being durable, flexible and easy to install, garden decking also looks fantastic.

Here’s our guide to planning your garden decking, things to consider and preparation if you are looking to transform your garden. If you are handy around the home and have DIY experience, decking is something that you can undertake yourself. There are some important planning factors to take in to account though before you order your materials. Planning is essential for your project to run smoothly.

Garden decking planning checklist

  1. Choose your space
It sounds obvious, but there are several things to consider here. If it is your first decking project, you may just want to go for a straightforward square or rectangular area. If you are feeling more adventurous, then an ‘L’ shape or something more elaborate might be what you are looking to achieve.
  2. Be aware of your surroundings
You might have visualised a huge area of decking, but be aware of overhanging branches from trees and bushes that you may have in your garden, and how they will interact with the space. Deciding to take a foot off the length of your decking area to prevent leaf fall could prove a wise decision.
  3. Greenery removal
Decking needs to be laid on a level and compact surface. Grass and vegetation will need to be removed prior to laying, so remember to consider this when planning.
  4. Height and access
Consider the height of your decking, is it going to lead directly in to your house or not? Will it be the same height as the doors out to your garden or are steps going to be required? The same goes for steps to the rest of your garden area. Will small children or elderly relatives be able to easily navigate them? Another consideration that may be important is wheelchair access.
  5. Main usage
Is the area going to be used for outdoor dining or for the kids to play? Are you going to want to relax under a gazebo on warm rainy evenings? If so, then ensuring the space is large enough for overhead coverings is important.
  6. Time to measure-up
If you have considered all of the above points, it’s time to get out the tape measure. Measure the size of the area you want to cover and you are ready speak to us about purchasing your decking materials.
