How To Fit A Handrail

How To Fit A Handrail

Do you need to know how to fit a handrail on your staircase but have no idea where to start? Do not fear, as here are ten easy steps.

HOW TO FIT A HANDRAIL: TOOLKIT

  • Two people
  • A pencil
  • A large spirit level
  • A tape measure
  • A chalk line
  • A stud finder
  • An electric drill
  • A saw (electric or otherwise)
  • Screws, brackets, and a handrail

TEN STEPS ON HOW TO FIT A HANDRAIL

1) In the UK, regulations state a minimum handrail height of 900 mm. With this in mind, use a spirit level and tape measure to measure from the bottom step to the desired height of the handrail. Make a mark at the desired height.

2) Do the same, using the spirit level and tape measure to find the same height on the top step. These will measure where brackets need to be at the top and bottom of the handrail in order to support its weight. For longer handrails, that have a need for additional brackets for support, do the same from equidistant middle steps.

3) Measure the height of the railing and the bracket that will be used to support the railing. Subtract this height from your desired height of the handrail. Remember that the handrail will be diagonal, so measure the bracket and handrail to see how they will sit on the wall. Subtract this amount off your measurement for the height of the handrail and this will tell you where the bracket needs to be installed.

4) Mark a dot on the wall where the bracket will sit both at the top of the stairs and the bottom. Do this for every place you will require a bracket.

5) Use the chalk line and run it through both dots. Pull the chalk line back and ping it against the wall. This will create a chalk guideline for the bracket, meaning that the brackets can be installed anywhere along that line. This will make it easier, later on, in the process of how to fit a handrail.

6) Use the stud finder to find out where the supporting parts of any interior wall are. This will tell you where on the wall it is safe to put weight and install a bracket. Once the ideal locations have been found then use the electric drill to create a guide for the bottom screw of the bracket.

7) Ensure the bracket is straight using the spirit level before tightening the bottom screw. Drill guide holes and secure the bracket from all points.

8) Place the handrail on the wall and measure from the end of the diagonal part of the skirting board upwards. This will create an end point for the handrail. Measure and, using the saw, cut the handrail to the desired length. Now you are ready to finish off how to fit a handrail.

9) Attach the handrail to the brackets by using a series of short screws. Depending on the type of bracket this may be done straight from the bracket, or alternatively a second bracket may be used in order to secure the handrail to its supports.

10) Apply a finish to the handrail. You can add varnish, paint, or decorative end caps depending on the aesthetics of your home. Stand back and admire your staircase.
