Cheshire Mouldings & Wood Turnings Ltd has boosted production of laminated newel posts five-fold thanks to the installation of a new Taylor rotary solid wood laminating press from JJ Smith.
The new machine is part of an ongoing investment plan at the St Helen’s company, which will also see a new purpose-built 30,000ft2 storage and distribution warehouse constructed later this year.
The machine, which is also being used for stairparts and general joinery sections, is a 5m capacity, 20-section semi-automatic hydraulic model with a semi-automatic conveyorised glue applicator.
It is equipped with 16 clamps per section that, when fitted with the optional rocker plates, can laminate material up to 150mm in thickness.
Cheshire Mouldings managing director John Carney said that increasing costs of timber coupled with increased production requirements meant a more automated method of producing the company’s laminated components was needed.
“One of the main attractions of the Taylor system was that it could be specified to meet our own particular requirements,” he said.
“It is simple to use, verstaile and very reliable while, at the same time, producing an excellent quality glue joint.”
